International Student Sports Carnival
This event was
organized by the sports and recreation center courtesy of Mr Azman Ishak. This
event took place for seven days from the 20th of October to the 27th
of October. This activity took place in Uniten (Universiti Tenaga Nasional) in
Putrajaya. This activity gathered hundreds of students from various
Universities to come together to compete for gold. It was a really good
experience for all of us and a time of enjoyment. So many things happened
during that short period of time that changed my mentality and Ideals.
On the 15th of October
the day shone bright as the AiU athletes were boarding the bus to head to their
destination Putrajaya. After an eight hour drive from AiU to Uniten we reached
our destination. The environment of Uniten consisted of several students from
all walks of Malaysia who had come to compete with other teams for the chance
to get gold medals for their universities. The activities ranged from football,
basketball, badminton, indoor rowing, netball, volleyball and road relay. Our
university had only registered for six out of seven of the events. The volleyball
team felt that they weren’t ready to represent the university in a competition
just yet. I was chosen to compete in the road relay competition which was set
to commence towards the last of the seven days.
The first few days of the
competition were blank days as they dealt with volleyball and badminton. The
AiU badminton team didn’t do too good against its opponents at this level,
having lost all its matches. The following day marked the first match for
indoor rowing. This was a very heated competition as it brought together the
strongest of the strong from each university to compete in the speed rowing
competition. The next few days dealt with several matches for football,
basketball, netball and badminton. The teams did fairly well and proceeded forward
except for the badminton team who couldn’t proceed, as they were lacking behind
due to their loses.
After a series of competition which
brought the football and netball teams to the final it finally came the road
relay team’s day. The team was scheduled to run at 10 in the morning for 3 km
and pass the baton from teammate to teammate. Our team was amped up against the
best runners that all the other universities had to bring. Before we ran we
started feeling taunted by the size and athleticism that the other universities
had displayed upon us. Until the point even one of my teammates had vomited
just before the race. Toward the beginning of the race we had no hope or faith
in our team’s ability to seal gold or even silver. But towards the beginning luck
came to our side. While starting fourth we managed to keep up and boost
ourselves to second and finish in second position in the end.
This was a very big achievement for
AiU as this is the first time that we competed in any competition and did our
best to achieve the best of our position. To make matters better our female
road relay team finished with gold. Overall both teams did exceptionally well
and displayed distinct athleticism to achieve one gold and one silver medal.
At the end of the tournament all the
teams came back to the buses and we took a tour around Putrajaya and we went
sight-seeing in the different sectors of Putrajaya before another 8 hour drive
back to AiU.
